My Capsule Wardrobe

By Aimee on

So I started looking into capsule wardrobes when I started researching Hong Kong. Sam and I are planning on travelling there later next year and knowing me, I started making lists and doing research. Whilst doing my research and looking up travel clothing lists I came across capsule wardrobes. I thought it was wonderful and simple and just like the bullet journals I realised it is how Sam organises his wardrobe already. He’s in fashion without even knowing it.

So step one to my capsule wardrobe was to go through and rid myself of clothes that were worn, no longer fit or didn’t have a dual purpose. This was hard with my dresses and shoes as you will see with the photos later. Once done I had 2 big bags full of clothes to donate. I even went through my jewellery. Anything that was heirloom or used regularly was kept.

Once I went through my clothes I was able to move everything into my wardrobe and get rid of my tall boy. I do have a hanging set of draws for socks, undergarments, swimwear and shorts. Everything else is hanging.

So what is in my wardrobe? Bear in mind that this is new to me so things over time will be refined.

Tops/Shirts

tops

I have 5 everyday t-shirts in white, black, grey, olive green, and b&w striped. In the middle is two tank tops in black and grey (I was wearing a third in black). Underneath those is a thermal shirt and my christmas shirt. These aren’t worn often but I find them useful so kept them. On the left is a long sleeved polka dot shirt, and a loose burgundy top that I like to wear to work. Lastly at the top is a loose fitting long mesh style top that I can wear over a tank top and leggings for a ‘dress’ or over bathers at the beach in summer. In regards to bathers as they aren’t pictured but kept my one piece and a bikini.

Jumpers/Cardigans

On the left we have a short sleeved cardigan, long sleeved light striped cardigan, mid sleeved light grey cardigan and a black blazer. On the right is a purple columbia comfy jumper, a grey and white striped jumper, a heavy woolen patterned cardigan, and a white long sleeved cardigan with sequined elbows. I think I struggled to cull the cardigans/jumpers but I honestly use all of them and often. Some of them are seasonal too so what is on the left is for warmer months and on the right for cooler months. That’s how I’m justifying my cardigans anyway.

Jackets

I now own three jackets. The burgundy one I purchased for my wedding, the olive green one was given to me and the third is a rain jacket. My colour palette if you haven’t noticed is shades of grey with burgundy and olive green as my accent colours.

Bottoms

I actually went and bought two more pairs of pants after realising that I only owned two pairs that I could really wear out in the light of day. I now have a sort of cream coloured cargo pants, pale denim jeggings, burgundy jeggings, dark blue jeans, trackies, and 2 pairs of leggings, one 34 length and one full length. (Not pictured a pair of black with white love heart leggings that were in the wash… guilty pleasure pair. Also not pictured my bike shorts and denim shorts)

Dresses

Dresses

Speaking of guilty pleasures I do love a dress. I have a mix of seasonal, casual, and formal dresses shown here. There’s lots of blues and florals in my dresses. Hiding in the back is my only maxi dress, a summery button down blue dress, my little mermaid dress, a formal navy gown, two semi formal blue floral dresses (one knee length one shorter), a long sleeved knitted grey dress, a black and white work dress, a blue striped casual mini dress, a green feather dress (that I made so I had to keep it), another button down floral dress (but in green!), and a long sleeved black dress. Something for all occasions!

Shoes

So I like to think I couldn’t have less but there’s at least one - two pairs I could probably get rid of. I have knee high brown boots, ugg boots, heeled short black boots, closed toe nude wedges, thongs (flip flops), neutral flats, open toed short heels, closed toe suede burgundy heels (wedding shoes! total keepers), every day black flat boot, casual sneakers, and running shoes (not that I run but I like to keep these).

So there you have it. Each piece of clothing in my wardrobe spread out for the world to see. I have done this in hopes that I have a seasonal travel wardrobe. Something simple and easy that can be packed up and taken with me wherever we travel. I also hope it makes getting ready for the day easier as everything should match almost everything else in the closet. I hope it inspires you to take a look at your own closet and think ‘things could be way simpler’.
