Top 10 Favourite Christmas Movies

Jingle all the Way

10: Jingle all the Way

This one recently popped up on Netflix and I remember this being taped as a kid and watching it. It is the reason I remember all the reindeer’s names because Arnold Schwarzenegger is attempting to win a doll for his son and runs toward a radio station reciting the reindeer - dasher, dancer, prancer, vixen, comet, cupid, Donner, Blitzen, Rudolph. It also shows the crazy lengths parents legit go to to get their kids gifts on Christmas. Two words! on line shopping. I hate shopping in the silly season because everyone is rushed and cranky. I think people need to take a deep breath and relax. Gift giving is fun but spending quality time with family is more important in my books. Also I may have started my Christmas shopping in September/October this year. 2am purchases whilst I was up feeding my bubby.

Look Who's Talking Now

9: Look Who’s Talking Now

Not traditionally a Christmas story but it has a lot of heart and Danny Devito as a talking dog. What’s not to love! The final scene shows the true meaning of family at Christmas time and warms my insides. I watched this one growing up and out of the three look who’s talking movies was by far my favourite.

The Muppet's Christmas Carol

8: The Muppet’s Christmas Carol

Ah the Muppets. It has good humour and follows the traditional story line but in it’s own Muppety way. There’s not much to tell really other than if you enjoy the Muppet’s then this is worth a watch.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

7: The Nighmare Before Christmas

The age old debate of do you watch this movie for Halloween or for Christmas? I would say both, but as it has Christmas in it’s title it is making this list. I love this film because it’s a genius piece of claymation. I’m also a sucker for a Tim Burton film and this has to be one of his best. The music, odd storyline and characters makes this film an interesting watch.

The Santa Clause

6: The Santa Clause

I always loved the idea of this film growing up. That when one Santa dies another takes his place. He then becomes ‘Santa’ by changing his looks, gains weight, gets a beard etc. This film also looked at the questions kids come up with when they start to question the existence of Santa and how hard split families can be during Christmas time.

The Polar Express

5: The Polar Express

This film came out when I was a young teenager and my Mum took us to see it. I think my love for this film is more from the memory of going and seeing it than the film itself. It’s still a good film and the animation is good and the story line is sweet. But spending time as a family around Christmas time and seeing a Christmas movie is why this one made my list. Every time I now see this film I think of that day, and I think of my mum.

Love Actually

4: Love Actually

How many times did this play on the t.v. as a kid? countless times I saw a commercial for this film and only as an adult have I fallen in love with Love Actually. British films are the best. The humour is better, the mix of actors are better. Bill Nighy playing the drunken washed up rock star is the best and worst part of that film. love and Christmas is all around us, so come on and let it snow. Just let it snow people.

Die Hard

3: Die Hard

Last Christmas Sam and I watched this movie after everyone had gone home. We set up our mattress in the living room as it was crazy hot and put on Die Hard. The next day I took a pregnancy test and found out I was pregnant with our little bubba. That memory will always be linked to Die Hard and I couldn’t be happier. Some people say it isn’t a Christmas movie but it is to me.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

2: How the Grinch Stole Christmas

This one was just the funniest film growing up. Jim Carrey plays a fantastic role and the dog that was his ‘reindeer’ was trained really well. It still makes me laugh to this day especially when he’s crying and says his eyes are leaking. Also when he’s trying on clothes to wear to the Christmas party and struts around. Like all Christmas stories it has a beautiful message as well. That Christmas isn’t about the lights, the gifts or the money. It’s about the time you spend with people.

A Charlie Brown Christmas

1: A Charlie Brown Christmas

Topping my list is A Charlie Brown Christmas. Poor Charlie Brown. They all hate on him but I loved his little tree. I love Snoopy’s dance most of all though. My Nanna had (and probably still has) this on tape and we would watch it every Christmas when we visited. Sometimes I would watch it when it wasn’t Christmas just because I love Snoopy sooooo much.

Honourable Mentions

So there you have it! my top 10 list. A few honourable mentions however: I know a number of people are a fan of ELF but in all honesty I’ve never seen the whole thing so can’t comment. To Sam’s family’s dismay I also haven’t watched national lampoons Christmas vacation…. yet. I’m sure they will change that soon. Also an honourable mention goes to Home Alone. It was funny and many peoples favourites but doesn’t make my list. (Sorry Jenna)
